How to recognize THE STORY

It’s a day like any other day. You wake up at six am to the sound of an alarm blasting you out of your dream. “Don’t go!” you mumble to the young woman who is shimmering out of being in the muted light of the forest. You sit up, blinking, and remind yourself to put a new notepad on your nightstand.

You can’t help but overhear the couple arguing in the seat in front of you on the bus as you commute to work.

“I don’t trust him,” the woman with the frayed coat collar says. “There’s something wrong with his eyes. He’s shifty.”

The man next to her tightens his shoulders. You don’t need to see his face to know he’s frowning. “Don’t be ridiculous,” he says. “We need the money. Besides, Frank isn’t shifty. He’s just not overly concerned with legalities.”

You lean forward, partly because you want to hear more and partly because the bus is pulling to a stop, throwing you toward the couple and their money problems and their intriguing scheme that involves a man named Frank. But the man and woman stand as the brakes screech to a stop and walk toward the bus door that has swung open, taking with them their mysterious conversation. In the distance you hear the screaming wail of an ambulance, and your mind turns from the couple to thoughts of the catastrophe behind its rushing.

Such is a day in the life of a writer where the problem is not finding ideas to write about, but rather recognizing which ideas are the stuff of marathons. You know, The Story, the one that will go the distance and eventually become a full-length novel. For years I clipped newspaper articles and jotted down dreams and snippets of overheard conversations. I even started a few novels based on those flashes of inspiration, but one after the other, they all fizzled out. Until the day at work when I was casually walking down a hallway and an image flashed into my mind of two boys, one tall and dark haired and the other short and redheaded, holding hands. In the background I saw a peaceful lake and a cross by the shore and I was certain the two boys were at a Bible camp in northern Minnesota. This was the moment of inspiration that would ultimately lead to Caught in the Crossfire, my first book, which will be released by Bold Strokes Books on June 16th, 2014.

So what made that idea different from all the other ideas I’d had? What made it The Story?

First, it seized me. Literally. I stopped walking in the middle of that hallway and said, “Whoa. Now that’s a book!” My reaction to that image was visceral. It pierced my mind, my emotions, my spirit, eventually taking root even in my body. As I labored to write the story I became increasingly aware that this was necessary for the story pulled energy from all those same places. There were times when my physical energy was tapped, my emotions worn thin, my mind exhausted—and yet I wrote on. Why? Because this story was anchored in the totality of my being and so I was able to shift to a different energy source when one became depleted.

Also, I’d fallen in love.

Sure, I’d flirted with writing in the past. I’d even had a few flings with stories I thought had book potential. But they eventually lost their appeal when they made unreasonable demands of my time or my creativity and I’d moved on without so much as a backwards glance. But not The Story. No, The Story came to me like the recognition of a soul mate or the first cry of a newborn child. Suddenly, and with all the ensuing chaotic life upheaval, and I gladly made the sacrifices it required.

And lastly, The Story challenged me to face the juxtaposed inconsistencies of my life. I am the mother of a gay son. The daughter of evangelical Christians. The granddaughter of missionaries, and the niece of ministers. The Story demanded I look past the smooth surface of civility.

Talk about terrifying.

But it was The Story, and so I dared to look, and in the daring and in the looking I discovered something wonderful: that the deeper I dove into the teeming truth that lay beneath the surface of my life and history, the more The Story revealed itself to me, and the stronger and clearer my voice grew as I attempted to tell it.

So how do you recognize The Story in the midst of all the stories you encounter every day? It’s not the story you see on the bookshelves or in the movie theaters. It’s not the story you think publishers are looking for. It is The Story that will tap your energy and creativity, make you want to shift your priorities, and challenge you to face your deepest fears.

And when you find it, embrace it. Hell, even fall in love with it.

For it is The Story that will make you a writer.

Two boys at Bible camp; one forbidden love.

That is the dilemma sixteen-year-old Jonathan Cooper faces when he goes away to Spirit Lake Bible Camp, an oasis for teen believers situated along Minnesota’s rugged north shore. He is expecting a summer of mosquito bites, bonfires with s’mores, and photography classes with Simon, his favorite counselor, who always helps Jonathan see his life in perfect focus.

What he isn’t expecting is Ian McGuire, a new camper who openly argues against phrases like pray the gay away. Ian is certain of many things, including what could happen between them if only Jonathan could surrender to his feelings. Jonathan, however, tosses in a storm of indecision between his belief in God and his inability to stay away from Ian. When a real storm hits and Ian is lost in it, Jonathan is forced to make a public decision that changes his life.

The "Muse" in Music

Every so often, I’ll hear a song and it will spark an idea within me. Characters begin to take shape, storylines unfurl in my mind, and before I know it, I’m sitting at my keyboard typing away. Music is one of life’s great inspirations because it provokes not only thought but emotion. Lyrics can touch us on a deep level, which is quite extraordinary when you think about it. A song is only a page long, and yet it can trigger a greater emotional response than some novels.

Music is used in commercials to help consumers associate positive feelings to a given product. It is used in movies to heighten tension and drama. Most recently, I’ve heard talk of multimedia e-books, where music and videos are being embedded in books to improve the way we experience a story.

Given the important role music plays in storytelling, I decided to put together a playlist that could act as the soundtrack to my Dark Souls series. So grab a cup of coffee, put on your earphones and enjoy!

Halo by Beyoncé

Back when I was writing Soul Bound, I kept hearing this song, and it always reminded me of Jace and Lia. The lyrics apply to both characters. Lia is bursting free of the shell she’s built around herself, breaking the rules, and risking it all for the love of her angel. As for Jace, Lia truly is his “saving grace.” Hear light burns through the growing darkness inside him, forcing him to become a better man. And let’s not forget the strange, compelling aura he keeps seeing around her.

All of Me by John Legend

This song is absolutely perfect for Soul Deep. Regan is definitely Marcus’s downfall, not to mention his “worst distraction.” Half the time he’s wondering what’s going on in her head, afraid she’s going to do something that will land her in hot water. Still, despite all her “perfect imperfections,” he risks everything to save her. These two may enjoy poking fun at each other, but when push comes to shove, Marcus and Regan are willing to put everything on the line for love.
Unconditionally by Katy Perry

This song beautifully describes the pure, tender love Angie and Adrian share in Soul Thief. Both characters have their own demons to overcome, but they accept each other wholeheartedly. From the first moment Angie lays eyes on Adrian, she sees the good in him. Adrian longs to break through Angie’s defenses and claim her heart, even though she warns him that loving her could prove dangerous. Whatever the future holds, whatever storm they may have to brave, they are determined to face it together. In fact, Adrian’s love for Angie is so powerful, that he is willing to fight any force to be with her, including time itself.

Let Me Go by Avril Lavigne

In Soul Chase, Adrian can’t move forward with Angie’s reincarnation, Emma, unless he lets go of the memories and guilt that plague him. He is so obsessed with holding on to the pain, that he risks losing his soul mate all over again. Emma fights for Adrian, determined to free him from the chains that bind him and make him understand that it’s okay to let go of the past and start over.

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri

I’m currently writing Cal’s story, the fourth and final installment in my Dark Souls series, and if this book is ever made into a movie, this could be its theme song. Cal has loved and mourned his wife for over five thousand years. Now, fate has seen fit to resurrect her, but Cal is unwilling to risk his mission…or his heart. Rhea is the reason he fell, the reason he damned all of mankind, and he fears if he lets her in, history will repeat itself. But her loneliness matches his own, and emotions he thought he buried ages ago keep rearing up within him. If he’s not careful, he may very well end up falling all over again.

Demons by Imagine Dragons

There can’t be a more perfect song to sum up my Dark Souls series than Demons by Imagine Dragons. Every word in this song is relevant, from the darkness my characters harbor inside to their overwhelming desire to protect the light in those they love. In every Dark Souls book, the hero struggles to guard the heroine from the beast hiding within him. His curse is one of darkness, but somehow, the heroine succeeds in teaching him how to go against his nature and embrace the light. It is a beautiful song, full of heart and emotion, the very things I try to infuse in each book I write.

Finding the Inspiration to Write

For me, writing has always been a fairly easy process from start to finish. Whether I’m working on a novel, short story or screenplay, finding inspiration has always been a pretty effortless job. However, much like everyone else, I do have several areas to channel my creative energies and find the inspiration needed to keep going.
I started writing as a kid back in the 3rd grade. Being one of those high achieving, nerdy types, I was always one of the kids who finished their work first, got bored and wrote short stories. Back then I was a huge fan of superheroes, classic movies and television shows. Anything involving Sidney Poitier, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney or Alfred Hitchcock was huge in the house. Before long, I was writing short stories dealing with everything from imaginary superheroes to murder mysteries and detective stories…even at a very young age. Being born and raised in New Orleans comes with a ton of advantages for inspiration, especially with writers. A beloved international city, New Orleans is rich with history, a diverse culture along with a seemingly endless canon of legends, ghost stories and folklore. Anyone who’s ever taken a ghost tour or just gone sightseeing along St. Charles Ave. or through one of the many above ground cemeteries will vouch for the fact that New Orleans is virtually an artist’s paradise. Literary and artistic giants from Tennessee Williams to Anne Rice and Truman Capote have all made a name for themselves, taking in the vibes and colorful landscape that is ‘The Crescent City’.

As the years progressed, my growing passion for writing drew inspiration from a number of amazing talents. Playwrights such as August Wilson and Arthur Miller inspired me with their powerful and almost lyrical structure and dialogue. Spike Lee taught me the breathtaking power of using colorful imagery and pacing to deliver though-provoking messages. Adding to the list is a who’s who of talents, from such directors as Charlie Chaplin, Bernardo Bertolucci and Roberto Benigni to great writers such as James Baldwin, Langston Hughes and Stephen King. The years have given me a wealth of avenues to draw inspiration for writing, and those avenues are growing each and every day. Like most authors, I’ve had moments where I stumble with procrastination and writer’s block. Fortunately, my muse has always come in many forms, inspiring me to get back in front of the computer screen and create thoughtful, complex and insightful work that hopefully readers will enjoy. For fans of music and cinema, here’s a small sampling of what inspires me during those long days of writing. Hopefully it will do the same for you.
