If they say that life flashes right before your eyes when you die, do you also get a flashback of your exes when your perfect boyfriend is proposing to you? At least that's the case for Regina Cortez. There's her dramatic high school boyfriend, her first college crush, the irresistible heart breaker, and the ever elusive one. By backtracking to her past, will Regina make it to 'I Do'? Or will she just keep running away?
This review had been long over due. I finished this book on
time but I can't just bring myself to write a review because... time.
So, this will be short. I'll let you in three points. The good, the bad and the annoying.
THE GOOD.
This is something new. Definitely something new. I haven't
heard of something like this before and if you are the type of reader
wanting to peruse something new, then, this is worth the shot.
Quarter Life Crisis. I told myself time and time again that
I won't be experiencing QLF because I've already surpassed it years
ago, I was an early bloomer, I used to believe. But, I was wrong, I
still am doubting the things I want in life right now, the path I'm
heading and the career I want to have for all time. Thus, the going back
to school. So, if you're experiencing doubts in life (e.g. career,
lovelife, financial stability, dreams) then this book is for you.
Regina, the protagonist is tracking down her exes is a clearly
preponderant evidence of quarter life crisis.
Banter. Bickering. Dialogues. Dawn Lanuza is no doubt a
good writer. I can't say anything wrong about how she weaved her story.
It is easy to read and I definitely enjoyed it.
Kevin. If there's someone I like in this book, it's Kevin.
SPOILER ALERT! Who wouldn't want a guy who would leave the jetsetter
life to build a life with you?
THE BAD
Predicatability. I don't know if it's just me, but I've
already predicted what will happen in the story from maybe, Chapter 3.
Some characters are stereotypical, that's why. I still read to the end
though, because as I've said, it was a good read.
The premise. It might be new, but I don't like it. Tracking
down your ex and thinking about them just in time your boyfriend is
proposing? Damn, that's sick.
Love Story. I've always said this. I'm a big love story
junkie. I'll munch anything that spells romance. BUT make me believe
that there really is love. SPOILER AGAIN. In this book, we were just
given snippets of drunken nights and Regina's selfish and immature
moments to prove that the people who ended up together in the end is
really meant to be.
Happy Ending. Call me synical but I don't think she deserves that ending. Hahaha.
THE ANNOYING.
The nosy bestfriend. Get a life, Leslie. Seriously. She needs one.
Chase. Aside from being 'torpe', he is perfect. Nobody is perfect. Well, some fictional guys are. And this is why I'm a firm believer that anything Romance should also be shelved as 'Fantasy'.
Regina. I'm glad that she admitted to the fact that she
indeed is a 'Devil Woman'. She is selfish and ungrateful. But she
nevertheless achieved her goals, materialized her dreams and ended up
with a hot guy. Tell me, what I'm doing wrong with my life. Haha.
Hi Biena :) It's so funny reading your review! When I was writing that I also didn't feel like Regina deserved a good ending at first (I know, I know, I wrote it and I kinda hate my protagonist?) but I tweaked a couple of things, and decided to be kind to my fictional babies. Maybe you got that whole vibe from my initial disposition haha :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review!

Wow, thanks for dropping by. I also learned from the Acknowledgment part of the book that you intended it to go 'my' way (just kidding).
ReplyDeleteI'll be on the look out for your next book. Please keep on writing!
Haha yes! Maybe I should post that alternate ending somewhere... :)
